3/Lavalife
Lavalife is based in Toronto, Canada, and was launched in 1997. As such it is very popular amongst Canadians, especially as the site is also available in French. The web based version of the dating service developed when the owners of the soon to be online, Lavalife, bought out an existing, established, and already successful online dating site formerly known as Webpersonals. The existing site was completely revamped and online under the name of Lavalife effective 1997. The site has been successful particularly in Canada. Annually, Lavalife has reached revenues of roughly $100M a few times in its history.
Members can see relatively easily when another user logged in last, as well as when they last changed their profile. Most larger dating sites show you all profiles, regardless of when the person logged in last, or don’t provide this information. Great feature if you want to increase your chances of getting a reply, since folks who aren’t logging in for for years likely aren’t single anymore either.

Zoosk claims to have “registered” more than 50 million singles.According to The Economist, Zoosk has had 4.8 million unique visitors to its website in November 2010, more than Match.com.According to the Wall Street Journal, Zoosk had 15 million active monthly users around March 2011.

Additionally, users can not completely opt-out of promotional emails from Zoosk without deactivating their account on the site.
Zoosk users can access the service on Zoosk’s main website or use its third-party application on their Facebook, Bebo, Hi5, Tagged, or Myspace social networking platforms.Zoosk also offers a mobile phone version of its service.
6/MatchMaker
Matchmaker is an adequate online dating site with a simple interface, multiple ways to search, and two ways to communicate. This is one of the smaller sites with the oldest average age of visitor profiles.
Launched in 1985 as a simple bulletin-board dating system, MatchMaker.com is now a thriving community of more than 8 million registered members, with 50,000 new sign-ups each week. As one of the oldest dating sites around, MatchMaker is also one of the most trusted and respected dating sites. When you join MatchMaker, you will be asked to complete a fairly extensive questionnaire, which can take you from a few minutes to an hour, depending on how much work you put into it.
To communicate with other members, Matchmaker offers instant messaging, expressions of interest and emails. Look for the heart next to a member’s listing: half a red heart indicates one member has viewed the other; an entirely red heart indicates you’ve viewed one another. You can also send a person a digital gift such as a dessert, flowers, a pet or a stuffed animal.Chat rooms and the ability to mark members as favorites are two additional site features available on Matchmaker. Higher ranked sites offer many more features like an online magazine and the ability to send recommendations on to friends, which would fit well with Matchmaker.
7/Date.com
Date.com is an online dating community dedicated to helping over 8 million members develop the right relationship for them since 1997. Members can browse the site, post a profile, and include a photograph for free! When the member’s search identifies someone he or she would like to contact, they can upgrade to a Gold membership and send email, instant message and chat online.
Date.com has all the features you would expect in a dating site (see the list of features above for a complete list). The only major feature that we would like to have seen is the ability for free members to reply to emails sent to them by Premium members. As it stands, if you’re a free member on Date.com and someone you like sends you an email, you will have to upgrade your membership before you can reply. Some other dating sites (though not all) do allow free members to reply to e-mails they’re sent. The fact that you can’t do this on Date.com is a major hindrance to finding a date, whether you’re the free member who received the email and cannot reply without upgrading your membership, or whether you’re the paid-up member who sent the email to a free member. Either way, this is a bit of a bummer.
8/Meetic.com
Meetic is an online dating service founded in November 2001 and publicly quoted since October 2005. It is among the main firms in its industry in Europe. Meetic was founded by Marc Simoncini.
According to JupiterResearch, Meetic is the largest online dating service in Europe. The service had 525,000 subscribers in 2007.By February 2009, when the company acquired the European activities of Match.com, it grew to have more than 30 million subscribers.
Meetic.com has an international team of about 30 people who are responsible for screening profiles, photos and personal ads, as well as responding to complaints regarding users who are abusive to others or have posted immoral material within their profiles. Personal information is never displayed on the dating site and users contact each other in chat windows with usernames selected during sign-up. Other users can only view user-selected profile information, and photos. Contact between users at Meetic is also facilitated via on-site email. Users also have the ability to block other users and place them on a “black list”.
9/True.com
True is an online dating service that was founded in 2003 by entrepreneur Herb Vest. Its original name was TrueBeginnings.com, but the company felt that this name was too limiting, as company leadership wanted to expand the company into other markets one day. In 2004 the domain name True.com was purchased and the company changed its name. True is known for its strict policies regarding background checks, which are used to ensure that members are not felons or married. Vest reports 16 million total members, as of May 2007 but it is unclear how many of them are actual paying or active members. Of that, an independent analysis shows an estimated 3.8 million unique visits to the site per month
True has lobbied state lawmakers in favor of legislation requiring online dating services to disclose whether or not they conduct background checks.
True.com markets itself as the safest, most trustworthy dating site around. No other dating site runs background checks on its members like True does. True.com screens all its members for any US felonies or sexual convictions against one of the largest criminal records databases on the internet. They also screen all of their members against various public records to ensure they are indeed single, as they claim to be. True.com claim they will bring civil action against any members who have felony convictions or who are married. While this may all seem a little over the top, it does provide a safer environment and greater peace of mind for all of True.com’s legitimate members, especially female members. It is mainly because of this no-nonsense stance taken by True.com, that it has one of the most even male-to-female ratios of any dating site we’ve reviewed, which is great news for girls and guys alike.
10/Flirt.com
Flirt is a site for girls and guys looking for fun, flirty encounters rather than serious dating. The site is predominantly for the younger crowd, though there are older members there and some seeking longer term relationships. The site offers totally free membership for women, while men can join for free but must pay for additional services.
Members of Flirt.com can open their own extensive photo profile, complete with a vast amount of information and an unlimited collection of member photographs. These image galleries are linked to each member’s profile, with each individual being able to decide whether their images are privately viewable (only by those who are invited) or they are added to the site’s extensive image galleries. These galleries are a great way to check out the hottest members on the site, as well as simply have some fun looking at images of the sexiest members.Once a member has found the sort of person they’re looking for, Flirt.com is packed full of features that help make it easy to get in touch and start up a relationship. They can contact others using mail or instant chat, or really heat things up by using the site’s fantastic video chat feature. Members can also rate profiles based on how hot they are, and receive ratings themselves so they can find out where they rank within the site’s membership.
