A 24 aims to bring back the original and legendary Edgar Allan Poe gothic tale, The Masque of the Red Death. Actress Mikey Madison is in negotiations and discussions to star in a central and leading role in this daring and audacious reimagining of the original tale. This art project has been described as a “wildly revisionist and darkly comedic” take on Poe’s short story, released in 1842. Its aim is to explore timeless and universal themes, presenting a new version by looking at them through a contemporary and modern perspective.

Madison will be cast in double duty as twin sisters-one, of course, born into nobility and the other into humble, common circumstances a plot twist that recalls the timeless Barbie as the Princess and the Pauper. In this exciting story, the common twin is where the action is as she manages to infiltrate the plague-quarantined abbey of her rich counterpart, thereby putting a creative and new spin on Edgar Allan Poe’s classic tale that is all about the rich trying so desperately to ward off the grasp of a deadly plague.

This specific adaptation has come into play after the exit of actress Sydney Sweeney from the project, an exit necessitated by her scheduling conflicts that occurred due to the production of the third season of HBO’s hit series Euphoria. Madison, who has gained fame for her stellar performances in movies like Scream and the award-winning Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, is now poised to take on the challenge of playing dual roles. This project is one of her first big undertakings after her recent success of winning an Oscar, which further emphasizes the importance of her participation in this adaptation.

Directed and written by the talented Charlie Polinger, this film is a major production between the very highly regarded production companies A24 and Picturestart. Lucy McKendrick also makes a major input into this project in the form of her experience as an executive producer. Although details of the production design are still tightly guarded and have not yet been made public, the very highly regarded status of A24 for creating visually stunning productions that delve into complex themes very highly recommends that the viewer can look forward to having a very special and immersive experience within the world of film.

Poe’s original story, which revolves mostly around the character of Prince Prospero and his determined attempts to flee a fatal plague by secluding himself and his court within the secure walls of a strongly fortified abbey, has been adapted many times throughout the years. One such adaptation is a highly popular 1964 film starring the highly regarded actor Vincent Price in a major role.

This new version attempts to offer a fresh interpretation of the story, examining its profound analysis of mortality and inequality in society. These are not only the themes at the core of the narrative but are also eerily pertinent and evocative today, challenging the viewer to examine how they correspond to contemporary society.

The production cycle of the highly anticipated film The Masque of the Red Death is set to start later this year. Industry leader A24 is going all out to make huge publicity and hype for this project. With the film industry still trying to find new ways of reimagining and retelling classic stories, this specific project is a bold and an interesting attempt that perfectly blends the elements of gothic horror with modern current issues and social commentary.
