Squid Game Season 3 ends with shocking character deaths, including the sacrifice of main protagonist Seong Gi-hun.
Netflix’s worldwide phenomenon Squid Game has wrapped for the last time after three captivating Seasons, and Season 3 has left fans shocked as they learnt of the deaths of core players in the series, and possible hints of a new universe through spin-offs.
Season 3 was launched earlier this year and finished on June 27 with a thrilling, high-stakes finale that remained true to the show’s overwhelming darkness. As always, the show’s unexpected moments were not in short supply, including the jaw-dropping death of the series’ main character, Seong Gi-hun, aka Player 456.
Gi-hun, the pillar of the show since Season 1, meets a tragic end for his character in the finale. After returning to the lethal games, hoping to finally put them out of business once and for all, Gi-hun has to make the sad decision of saving himself or an innocent child in the last game.
He chooses life for a child, so the child Player 222 wins the game and survives. His death represents the end of his long, agonizing journey and the breakdown of a system he worked hard to reveal.
Fans around the world were shocked by Gi-hun’s death. Many believed Gi-hun would lead a final revolution against the organizers of the games, but the show’s creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, explained the decision this way: “We decided to show that ‘true change sometimes requires the ultimate sacrifice.'”
The Front Man (In-ho) is another key character, and he is another survivor of the ultimate desecration of the game facility. Gi-hun’s sacrifice affected him deeply, however, and he decides to close down the operations on the island. He travels to Los Angeles to return Gi-hun’s things for him, along with his son’s winnings.
In the final scenes, In-ho looks guilty and disturbed. He is introduced to a mysterious woman living in Los Angeles, played by the Oscar-winning actress Cate Blanchett, who dares him to play ddakji, clearly echoing the same way new players were selected in the early seasons.
Her appearance hints that the deadly games might be expanding to the USA.
The last episode has already generated speculation that Netflix ongoing talks of many spin-offs, such as a possible American iteration of Squid Game. Blanchett’s surprise cameo indicated intentions for a worldwide expansion.
Director David Fincher is in discussions about directing a U.S.-based spin-off series. Although Netflix has not officially confirmed the spin-off, there is already considerable excitement among fans, especially coming off the cliffhanger episode.
Hwang Dong-hyuk said that while Season 3 would be the final season of the main narrative, it could be the last for the series, but he also said he is open to spin-offs and sequels. “There are a lot of stories still to be made in this universe; we have just touched the surface.”
Squid Game Season 3 concluded with heartbreak, violence, and hope; while the original story is complete, the series leaves behind an abundance of room to tell new stories with new characters and settings.
Whether it is a U.S.-based spin-off, a story about the mysterious recruiters, or a deeper examination of the Front Man’s past, it is obvious that Squid Game can provide more.
