A new Lifetime docuseries confirms a dramatic moment in Naomi Judd’s life when she fired a gun at her husband.

In a highly intimate revelation, country music legend widower Larry Strickland has confirmed a years-long whispered and explosive event from their marriage:

Naomi once shot a gun at him after catching him cheating. This revelation comes as part of the new Lifetime docuseries The Judd Family: Truth Be Told, which aired May 10 and 11.

It took place during the 1980s when Strickland was back home, and a woman in the Northeast rang them, telling him she was in love with him. After returning home, Naomi, overwhelmed with the deceit, responded by tearing up photos and throwing out his things.

At one intense point, she shot at him. Strickland, reflecting on the event within the docuseries, agreed, “Well, it happened. That’s all I can say. That’s all I’m gonna say. It happened.”

This episode was dramatized before in the 1995 TV film Naomi & Wynonna: Love Can Build a Bridge and referenced in Naomi’s 1993 autobiography of the same name. Despite all the turmoil, Naomi stayed with Larry, getting married in 1989 and remaining married for 33 years until she died in 2022.

Naomi Judd’s life was characterized by both professional success and personal challenges. She struggled with severe mental health issues, depression, and anxiety for many years.

Her daughter, Ashley Judd, has been very candid about her mother’s mental health illness, highlighting the need to separate the individual from the disease.

In April 2022, Naomi died by suicide at the age of 76, a day before she and her daughter Wynonna were scheduled to be inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame. Her passing put the spotlight on the continuing discourse regarding mental health, particularly among public figures.

The latest docuseries hopes to capture an in-depth view of the Judd family’s life, bringing to light their successes and their struggles.

In revealing these private details, the family intends to create greater insight into the working of mental illness and the value of sympathy and support.
